WASHINGTON, DC — IREX, a global provider of ethical AI and intelligent video analytics, has introduced a major update to its FireTrack fire and smoke detection module, significantly improving both speed and accuracy while expanding its range of applications.

According to an article on The Next Web, the upgraded system is designed to operate entirely on existing camera infrastructure, allowing organizations to enhance fire safety without installing additional hardware.

The updated FireTrack module processes visual data in just 75–105 milliseconds — roughly one-tenth of a second — enabling near-instant detection of fire and smoke. This rapid response, combined with improved performance in challenging conditions such as poor lighting or adverse weather, supports earlier intervention and helps reduce the risk of large-scale damage.

One of the key improvements is the system’s ability to analyze how fire and smoke evolve over time. By tracking these patterns, the AI can distinguish real threats from harmless visual effects like fog, glare, or vehicle headlights. This approach significantly reduces false alarms, allowing emergency teams to focus on genuine incidents that require immediate attention.

IREX has also enhanced how the system identifies hazards within video footage. Instead of relying on traditional bounding boxes, the updated module uses segmentation technology. This method applies color-coded masks directly onto affected areas — green for fire and red for smoke — enabling more precise detection of irregular shapes and improving localization accuracy within each frame.

Another major advantage of the upgraded FireTrack system is its ability to deliver early warnings faster than conventional fire detection technologies, such as optical or heat-based sensors. By continuously analyzing live video feeds for visual indicators of fire and smoke, the system can detect threats in real time and provide immediate alerts.

Each detection event is supported by a visual snapshot, allowing operators and first responders to quickly verify the situation and take appropriate action. This feature improves situational awareness and accelerates response times in critical scenarios.

According to Serge Smirnoff, Head of PR at IREX, the platform’s compatibility with existing CCTV networks enables cities and organizations to strengthen fire safety without investing in specialized sensor hardware. This makes the solution both scalable and cost-efficient for a wide range of use cases.

The updated FireTrack module is suitable for deployment across multiple environments, including energy facilities, transportation hubs, schools, hospitals, residential and commercial buildings, as well as parks and forests. By leveraging already installed surveillance infrastructure, it provides a practical and flexible approach to improving fire safety across both urban and natural settings.
